Our Curriculum

Making, Tinkering & Engineering

  • How can we use everyday materials to build our ideas?
  • What tools can help us create?

In this area of our classroom children learn how tools work, how materials behave, how to take things apart and put them back together, and how to use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) to creatively solve problems. Kids are free to simply tinker, to make things, or to engineer things they made to perform a specific task. While the product can be exciting for children, we're equally excited about the process. Kids ask questions and then explore solutions by using the process of iteration (trying another strategy to build upon previous learning), they solve problems and develop understanding and skills that are the foundation for long-term success and a lifelong enjoyment of learning and critical thinking.

The Curriculum at Fishtown Montessori School

Traditional Montessori Curriculum includes practical life, sensorial, language, math, and culture (history, science, geography, art, and cultural studies). The curriculum at Fishtown Montessori School addresses all of the main areas of a Montessori classroom and takes it a step further by adding additional child-centered and child-led curricula intended to address needs specific to the 21st century.
